Calculating Heat Pump Energy Savings

Can I Use My Heat Pump Wise, VA, More Efficiently?

April 22, 2022

Let’s say that you’re already scheduling routine maintenance for your heat pump in Wise, VA. If you take up the following tips, you may find that your heat pump runs even more efficiently than it is now.

Replace the Air Filter

The maintenance service technician may have done it for you, but replacing the air filter is more of a quarterly job and not an annual or biannual one. Pleated filters need replacing every 90 days, whereas cheaper fiberglass filters go bad after 30 days. The simple task of changing filters keeps the air flowing nicely and alleviates any stress on the motor.

Program the Thermostat

Take advantage of your programmable thermostat and create a unique cooling schedule. Take into account when you sleep and when you’re away from the house, and raise the set point during these times. Then, you can lower the set temperature so that the heat pump turns on approximately 30 minutes before you wake up or come back from work.

At all other times, try to keep the set point between 70 and 72 degrees because this is the optimal range according to the EPA’s Energy Star program. Most people won’t require it to be lower than that.

Clean the Compressor

The compressor has some components in it that would probably force you into getting a completely new AC installation if they went bad. Clean the condenser coil in particular; all you’ll need is a soft brush and a fin comb for the coil fins. A clean condenser coil will more effectively release heat from your home.
